Canopy Program Director - Palo Alto, CA

This full-time position will attract an individual who enjoys the variety of responsibilities that a small organization offers. The Program Director is responsible for working with the Executive Director and the Program Committee to ensure that Canopy’s programs are well organized. Programs include outdoor activities such as seasonal tree plantings and tree care events, workshops, and other educational events. A large part of Canopy’s effectiveness in the community is organizing volunteers. The Program Director is responsible for volunteer recruitment, management and retention. Many of Canopy’s events take place on weekends and the Program Director will be expected to work Saturdays several times a month.

REGIONAL PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Forest Care

One full-time position based in San Bernardino with regular travel around the local mountain areas. The purpose of this position is to coordinate the Forest Care Program in communities within and around the San Bernardino National Forest. This position requires the ability to develop and deliver objective educational programs to homeowners, forest landowners, forest workers, natural resource professionals, and other stakeholders as well as create and maintain complex databases.

INTRODUCTION
Be part of a partnership frontier! Forest Care brings federal, state and local partners together to help educate the communities of San Bernardino National Forest about the importance in nurturing a healthy forest that provides a safe and vital home to both people and wildlife. The San Bernardino National Forest Association (SBNFA) and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) are working closely with local community-based organizations and Fire Safe Councils to implement this fuels reduction program, which will facilitate the removal of small-diameter green trees growing on privately owned land in and around the National Forest. This program will help to increase forest health as well as create more fire-safe communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Communications and Outreach
1. Develop communications to meet needs of target audiences.
2. Coordinate and implement public communications efforts to educate the local communities about program initiatives.
3. Arrange appropriate local events and meetings to introduce local communities to the program and engage them in the program mission.
4. Attend, assist and participate in meetings with local community groups, agencies, and other organizations to update, review and discuss program and project development.
5. Gather stakeholder input concerning program and project plans.
6. Coordinate with the agency specialists and program staff to develop, maintain, and update maps, brochures, and other materials.
7. Serve as point of contact for landowners to identify eligible participants, and coordinate with project staff and contractors to process landowner requests for participation.
8. Assist landowners with technical advice, incentive programs and education in forestland management.
9. Work collaboratively with SBNFA staff; federal, state and local agencies; landowners; and other stakeholders.
10. Participate in appropriate local activities that will provide SBNFA presence in the area and maximize our ability to identify and build relationships with key community members.
11. Develop and implement evaluation plans.

Data Management
1. Develop and maintain complex, multi-layered databases in Microsoft Access for tracking and analysis.
2. Work with project staff to identify sites of potential interest. This may include digitizing existing data, gathering property information from town offices, cleaning existing data, and analyzing and populating databases to track landowner information.
3. Process contracts, site evaluations, invoices, and landowner reimbursements.

QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor’s degree in forestry or related discipline, Master’s preferred.
- Strong communications and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey the mission of the Forest Care program and the SBNFA to diverse groups.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and experience in developing positive interactions with the public.
- Strong knowledge of database design and maintenance.
- Experience in planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating programs is preferred.
- Ability to set priorities, organize time efficiently and balance several tasks at once.
- Willingness to travel throughout the area and have reliable transportation and valid driver's license.

- Salary: $30,000 – $45,000 plus benefits
Office Location: San Bernardino, CA (USDA Forest Service Supervisor’s Office)
