If urban and community forestry is to ever be sustainable, then the benefits that an urban forest provides must be "translated" into tangible funding, thereby reducing dependence upon the politically uncertain city's general fund. Urban forestry advocates ask communities to invest significant capital into building the green infrastructure, but to-date the returns have only been "seen" as aesthetic improvements.

Efforts to assess private sector fees of all sorts are part of the solution in taping these returns. Demonstrating how the green infrastructure improves air and water quality, and provides significant energy savings is another part of this solution. However, the urban forest itself generates resources values that are potentially marketable such as wood raw material from trimmings and removals – "urbanwood."

As part of UFEI's on-going efforts to demonstrate tangible benefits of the green infrastructure, this web resource is provided to promote the development of the market for urbanwood. As the urbanwood industry grows, communities will not only realize savings in greenwaste disposal costs but may soon obtain revenues.
